Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: denial of service via BPF_MAP_TYPE_PROG_ARRAY
July 2016 by Marc Jacob
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : https://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
A local attacker can create numerous BPF_MAP_TYPE_PROG_ARRAY on
the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a denial of service.
Impacted products: Fedora, Linux, Ubuntu.
Severity: 2/4.
Creation date: 04/05/2016.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The Linux kernel can be installed on a system with:
– more than 32Gb of memory
– RLIMIT_MEMLOCK disabled
However, the usage of 2^32 BPF_MAP_TYPE_PROG_ARRAY generates a
fatal error in the kernel.
A local attacker can therefore create numerous
BPF_MAP_TYPE_PROG_ARRAY on the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a
denial of service.
