Websense Security Labs alert : new wave of email attacks targeting the Skype Email Toolbar this Monday

March 2010 by Marc Jacob

Websense Security LabsTM ThreatSeeker NetworkTM has discovered a new wave of email attacks targeting the Skype Email Toolbar this Monday. Until now, the amount of the spam is not large, but we believe it will increase.

The spam contains a SkypeToolbarForOutlook.zip file in the attachment, which looks deceptive but in fact it’s a backdoor trojan that has a very low AV detection.

“ Since Monday we’ve been investigating a new wave of email attacks inviting people to get the Skype Email Toolbar. The spam email which looks legitimate and uses the Skype logo, actually contains a backdoor Trojan. At the moment detection levels are low with only 6 out of the top 42 antivirus engines picking this up. While the amount of the spam so far is not large, we believe it will increase and want the public to be aware of the scam before it grows.” - Carl Leonard, Security Research Manager, Websense Security Labs.

Websense® Messaging and Websense Web Security customers are protected against this attack.
