Webroot Comment: Facebook "dislike" phishing scheme

September 2015 by Webroot

Following the news that Facebook users have been targeted by scammers offering a fake dislike button, find the below commentary from Tyler Moffitt, Senior Threat Research Analyst, at cybersecurity firm Webroot.

“This tactic of enhanced Facebook features has always been on the scene scamming people, this is similar to the "Facebook gold" that went around a few years ago. It was just a joke at first, but it gained traction and then scammers used it as social engineering avenue - they uploaded pictures that had fake "Facebook gold only" images blocking the pictures. People actually paid money from the fraudulent links posted to sign up for the fake service. Since this commotion started from an official announcement from Zuckerberg, then it’s likely that this will provide an easier "catch" for the scammers.”
