Vigil@nce - libxml2: denial of service via Unbounded Allocations

September 2015 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can create malformed XML data, in order to generate a
denial of service in applications linked to libxml2.

Impacted products: libxml2, RHEL.

Severity: 2/4.

Creation date: 22/07/2015.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The libxml2 library implements an XML parser.

However, an XML document build, with a large number of entity
substitutions, especially forces the parser to loop numerous times
("billion laughs" variant attack), to consume a large amount of
memory.

An attacker can therefore create malformed XML data, in order to
generate a denial of service in applications linked to libxml2.
