A local attacker can send a malicious request to generate a denial
of service.

Gravity: 1/4

Consequences: denial of service of service

Provenance: user shell

Means of attack: no proof of concept, no attack

Ability of attacker: expert (4/4)

Confidence: confirmed by the editor (5/5)

Diffusion of the vulnerable configuration: high (3/3)

Creation date: 20/08/2008

Identifier: VIGILANCE-VUL-8042

IMPACTED PRODUCTS

 VMware Workstation [confidential versions]

DESCRIPTION

The "VMware workstation" system uses an "hcmon.sys" driver to
monitor USB.

This module is vulnerable because it does not sanitize correctly
arguments from "METHOD_NEITHER" user mode.

The IOCTL function is used to control peripherals such as USB
ports.

A local attacker can therefore send a malicious IOCTL request to
generate a denial of service.
