Vigil@nce: Opera, buffer overflow of file

November 2008 by Vigil@nce

SYNTHESIS

An attacker can create a HTML file containing a long "file://" uri
in order to execute code when it is locally opened.

Gravity: 1/4

Consequences: user access/rights

Provenance: document

Means of attack: 1 attack

Ability of attacker: technician (2/4)

Confidence: contradictory sources (1/5)

Diffusion of the vulnerable configuration: high (3/3)

Creation date: 18/11/2008

IMPACTED PRODUCTS

 Opera

DESCRIPTION

Opera does not accept to open "file://" uris from internet: they
can only be used from a file opened on the local computer.

If the uri size is over 16kbytes, a buffer overflow occurs and
leads to code execution.

An attacker can therefore invite the victim to open a local HTML
file with Opera in order to execute code on his computer.
