Vigil@nce: NDISWrapper, buffer overflows

November 2008 by Vigil@nce

A WiFi attacker can create several overflows in NDISWrapper in
order to execute code on the system.

 Gravity: 2/4
 Consequences: administrator access/rights
 Provenance: radio connection
Means of attack: no proof of concept, no attack
 Ability of attacker: expert (4/4)
Confidence: confirmed by the editor (5/5)
Diffusion of the vulnerable configuration: high (3/3)
 Creation date: 07/11/2008

IMPACTED PRODUCTS

 Linux kernel

DESCRIPTION

The NDISWrapper tool is used to install Windows network drivers on
Linux.

When NDISWrapper is used with a WiFi card, it copies the ESSID
(the network name) in arrays of fixed size with the memcpy() or
sprintf() functions. A buffer overflow thus occurs.

An attacker can therefore send a long ESSID via the WiFi network
in order to execute code in the Linux kernel.
