Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: privilege escalation via perf_paranoid_kernel

December 2013 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can trace the execution of the Linux kernel, in
order to retrieve information to escalate his privileges.

Impacted products: Linux

Severity: 2/4

Creation date: 02/12/2013

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Linux kernel can trace operations, in order to measure
performances.

However, the perf_paranoid_kernel() function returns an incorrect
value, which allows users to trace functions.

A local attacker can therefore trace the execution of the Linux
kernel, in order to retrieve information to escalate his
privileges.
