December 2008 by Vigil@nce
SYNTHESIS
A local attacker can use the sendmsg() function in order to stop
the system.
Gravity: 1/4
Consequences: denial of service of computer
Provenance: user shell
Means of attack: 1 attack
Ability of attacker: technician (2/4)
Confidence: confirmed by the editor (5/5)
Diffusion of the vulnerable configuration: high (3/3)
Creation date: 28/11/2008
IMPACTED PRODUCTS
– Linux kernel
DESCRIPTION
A Unix socket can be used to exchange messages via
sendmsg()/revcmsg(). These messages can contain a file descriptor
associated to a socket.
A local attacker can block sendmsg(), and wait for the Garbage
Collector to delete resources linked to the socket. This error
stops the system.
A local attacker can therefore create a denial of service.
