Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: data modification via xen/blkback
June 2013 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
When a device is mounted as read-only, an attacker located in a
Xen guest system can alter or delete data.
Impacted products: Linux
Severity: 1/4
Creation date: 06/06/2013
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The drivers/block/xen-blkback/blkback.c file implements the access
to block type devices (hard drive) for Xen guest systems.
However its dispatch_discard_io() function does not check if the
device is mounted as read-only.
When a device is mounted as read-only, an attacker located in a
Xen guest system can therefore alter or delete data.
