Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: buffer overflow via hiddev

August 2016 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : https://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can generate a buffer overflow via the device driver
hiddev from the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a denial of
service, and possibly to run code.

Impacted products: Debian, Fedora, Linux, openSUSE, openSUSE Leap,
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, SLES.

Severity: 2/4.

Creation date: 28/06/2016.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Linux kernel includes a device driver "hiddev" which manages
the commands named HIDIOCGUSAGES and HIDIOCSUSAGES.

When a userspace program call ioctl with one of these commands,
the array uref_multi->values is filled in from the array
field->value. However, some bound checks are missing and the
caller can make the loop continue writing after the buffer.

An attacker can therefore generate a buffer overflow via the
device driver hiddev from the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a
denial of service, and possibly to run code.
