Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: buffer overflow of batman-adv
January 2015 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can generate a buffer overflow in the batman-adv
module of the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a denial of
service, and possibly to execute code.
Impacted products: Fedora, Linux
Severity: 2/4
Creation date: 02/01/2015
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The batman-adv module implements the B.A.T.M.A.N. (Better Approach
To Mobile Adhoc Networking) routing protocol.
However, the batadv_frag_merge_packets() function does not
correctly compute the required size to store data of fragmented
packets. The size of data is thus greater than the size of the
storage array, and an overflow occurs.
An attacker can therefore generate a buffer overflow in the
batman-adv module of the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a
denial of service, and possibly to execute code.
