Vigil@nce - FreeBSD: buffer overflow of stdio

December 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can generate a buffer overflow in stdio of FreeBSD, in
order to trigger a denial of service, and possibly to execute code.

Impacted products: FreeBSD

Severity: 2/4

Creation date: 11/12/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

Data to be written on stdio are buffered, and unstacked by the
fflush() function.

However, the __sflush() function does not correctly manage the
shift operation, so an overflow occurs.

An attacker can therefore generate a buffer overflow in stdio of
FreeBSD, in order to trigger a denial of service, and possibly to
execute code.
