Vigil@nce - Cisco NX-OS: shell command injection

September 2015 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can use the "tar" command of Cisco NX-OS, in order to
execute any shell command.

 Impacted products: Cisco Nexus, NX-OS.
 Severity: 2/4.
 Creation date: 01/07/2015.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Cisco NX-OS product offers a command line interface for
administration purpose.

This interface may be used for backup and restore operations, with
the standard Unix tool "tar". However, the command line of the tar
process to be run is build in a wrong way as special characters
escaping is incomplete. This allows an attacker to inject any
shell command in the tar command (where this last shell is the
Unix one).

An attacker can therefore use the "tar" command of Cisco NX-OS, in
order to execute any shell command.
