Vigil@nce: Cisco FWSM, denial of service of SCCP

February 2010 by Vigil@nce

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can use SCCP (Skinny Call Control Protocol) control
messages, in order to generate a denial of service.

Severity: 2/4

Consequences: denial of service of service

Provenance: intranet client

Means of attack: no proof of concept, no attack

Ability of attacker: expert (4/4)

Confidence: confirmed by the editor (5/5)

Diffusion of the vulnerable configuration: high (3/3)

Creation date: 17/02/2010

IMPACTED PRODUCTS

 Cisco Catalyst
 Cisco Router

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The SCCP (Skinny Call Control Protocol) protocol is used by Cisco
VoIP phones, to communicate with the CallManager. A packet is
composed of:
 4 bytes indicating the size
 4 null bytes
4 bytes for the message type
 message

When a malformed SCCP packet transits by Cisco FWSM, it reloads.

An attacker can therefore use SCCP control messages, in order to
generate a denial of service.

This vulnerability also impacts Cisco ASA (described in the
bulletin VIGILANCE-VUL-9458).
