Vigil@nce - Bind 9.10: denial of service via pre-fetch
May 2014 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can setup a malicious DNS server, and then invite
internal users to query Bind 9.10, and then reply to the pre-fetch
query, in order to trigger a denial of service.
– Impacted products: BIND
– Severity: 2/4
– Creation date: 12/05/2014
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The Bind product can be installed as a recursive DNS server,
replying to queries from users located on the internal network,
and then saving them in a cache.
The pre-fetch feature of Bind 9.10 tries to renew cached entries,
before they expire (TTL). However, if the reply from the
authoritative server is unexpected, Bind calls the REQUIRE
assertion.
An attacker can therefore setup a malicious DNS server, and then
invite internal users to query Bind 9.10, and then reply to the
pre-fetch query, in order to trigger a denial of service.
