Vigil@nce - Ansible Core: use of obsolete passwords

March 2017 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : https://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can make profit of a password update failure in
Ansible Core, in order to use privileged accounts.

Impacted products: Ansible Core, Fedora.

Severity: 2/4.

Creation date: 26/01/2017.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

Ansible is a tool for centralized administration.

Authentication relies on a MySQL database. However, it may happen
that the module "mysql_user" fails to update the account password
on a fresh instance. Old passwords, which are often not secret,
remains valid.

An attacker can therefore make profit of a password update failure
in Ansible Core, in order to use privileged accounts.
