Verizon to pay reduced price for Yahoo following hacks: Comment from Fujitsu

February 2017 by Paul McEvatt, Senior Cyber Threat Intelligence Manager in UK & Ireland at Fujitsu

It has been reported that Verizon is nearing a revised deal to acquire Yahoo at a price reduced by $300 million, in the wake of the cyber-attacks suffered by the company.

The comment from Paul McEvatt, Senior Cyber Threat Intelligence Manager at Fujitsu on what the news shows about the importance of cyber security.

Paul McEvatt, Senior Cyber Threat Intelligence Manager at Fujitsu

“If cyber security wasn’t already a priority agenda item across boardrooms, then the news today that Verizon has successfully negotiated a $300m discount on the acquisition of Yahoo due to its significant cyber security breaches will resonate with key stakeholders in many organisations.

“The looming legislation around GDPR has already established cyber security and breach readiness as topics requiring serious attention from business executives, due to the eye-watering fines of €20m or 4% of global annual turnover for non-compliance. However, today’s news shows that a cyber-attack could also have a significant impact for companies in merger and acquisition discussions.

“We have already predicted that in 2017 organisations will start taking a closer look at cyber security within their supply chain, as cyber-attacks have the potential to impact a business’ financial accounts. The damage to reputation and brand has always been a primary reason for concern for organisations who weren’t seen to be implementing sufficient housekeeping and security controls, but huge ICO fines coupled with real damage to a company valuation will ensure that cyber security related issues become an even higher priority.”
