Top University in Ireland Deploys Infoblox Appliances for DHCP and DNS

December 2010 by Emmanuelle Lamandé

Infoblox Inc, announced that one of Ireland’s top universities, the National University of Ireland, Galway, is using Infoblox appliances to manage their internal and external domain name system (DNS) and DHCP services.

With more than 16,000 students and more than 2,200 staff, NUI Galway has a distinguished reputation for teaching and research excellence. The University is home to two Science Foundation Ireland-funded Centers for Science, Engineering and Technology and the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) as well as DERI, the world’s largest research institute of Internet technology.

Using the University’s previous solution, each server had to be managed independently and there were frequent updates and patching required. These processes made poor use of the already limited IT staff resources. On the security front, the legacy systems were open to attack further adding to the IT burden. The IT staff had specific requirements for their new network infrastructure services vendor, including high availability, continuous uptime, reduced administrative overhead and costs and increased visibility. After evaluating several vendors, the University found that Infoblox was the best and most reliable solution.

The University worked closely with one of Infoblox’s UK resellers, Khipu Networks Limited, for a successful installation, maintenance and continued servicing of the appliances. The first phase of the implementation took place with the deployment of two Infoblox-1050 appliances. The Infoblox-1050-A network services appliance platform is designed to serve small- and medium-sized enterprises and branch-office applications, and can be deployed as a standalone unit or in high-availability pairs.

Phase two began with a major extension of Infoblox systems. The IT staff installed two more Infoblox-1050’s for primary and secondary internal DNS, two Infoblox-550’s for external authoritative DNS, as well as an additional two Infoblox-550’s to be used as cashing forwarders. All of the appliances are linked together and managed as a unified system with inherent resiliency and visibility benefits with Infoblox Grid™ technology.
