“Backup equipment was previously based on Novell servers running backup software plus tapes on an Netware OS”, explains Michel Sevaille, IS and Telecoms Manager for the municipality of Vauréal: “We then had to add and back up other Microsoft and Linux servers, plus new applications and databases. The existing tool could no longer cope”.

Vauréal’s town hall launched a call for tender to upgrade its backup system. “This led us to replace the old system with a DXL 3000 Synerway Appliance with a capacity of 3 TB. We divided this Appliance into two. One partition dedicated to file-based backups and the other to block mode protection for new clients using the Microsoft Hyper-V virtualisation server” continues Michel Sevaille.

2010 also saw the second security strengthening stage in the framework of a Disaster Recovery Plan and the acquisition of a second Synerway Appliance, hooked up to the network but located on another site. This second Appliance receives data replicated from the primary Appliance.

At Vauréal, the entire production from 150 workstations: files, Oracle and SQL databases is systematically backed up every evening in incremental mode. A full backup is externalised each week onto LTO tapes.

Regularly, restoration tests ensure the system is working as it should. “We are planning in the near future a major incident situation which will enable us to test Synerway’s Disaster Recovery Plan. Security is the cornerstone of our project” stresses Michel Sevaille, before adding: “We are satisfied with the choices we have made because Synerway have proved their availability, proximity and technical expertise. Implementing this system was both rapid and straightforward, rounded off by a training session which enabled us to be completely autonomous”.
