Thales contributes to securing Council of European Union communications

April 2010 by Marc Jacob

The Council of the European Union awarded a contract to Thales for the supply of cryptographic equipments to secure sensitive communications up to EU Secret level.

This contract provides for the supply of security equipments for IP networks (ECHINOPS) and related services. Delivery is scheduled for first half 2010.
Developed jointly by Thales, the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) and the French Agency for Information Systems Security (ANSSI), the ECHINOPS system is designed to ensure a very high security level and efficiently combats monitoring, modifications and intrusions.

In terms of security, throughput and latency, this system features performance that is among the best of all EU Secret-certified encryption solutions. With its multiprocessor architecture, ECHINOPS meets the most stringent protection standards for multimedia applications used by the administrations.
In 2008, a twofold assessment of ECHINOPS was conducted by the French and English administrations, resulting in ANSSI granting French Secret certification and the Council of the European Union delivering EU Secret certification. Used in France since 2006, ECHINOPS has been highly successful: over 5,000 devices are currently operating in French administrations and the French Armed Forces.

With 30 years’ experience in the field, Thales is positioned as a leading European player regarding its high-trust security solutions. “Today, our objective is to broaden our reach far beyond our borders,” stated Sylvie Ghez, Director of Information Systems Security activities for Defence and Government clients at Thales. “This contract is a milestone in our market development strategy.”
