Signify: Over five million people in the UK are expected to work from home today for National Work from Home Day

May 2008 by Signify

With an estimated 5 million workers avoiding the journey to work today for National Work from Home Day, Cambridge-based Signify is warning that without proper security, an increase in home working may put sensitive data at risk.

"With more and more people working from home and accessing their company network remotely, it is vital that employers have security in place to ensure that they are who they say they are and have authorization to access sensitive information and resources," says Dave Abraham, CEO at Signify. "Too many companies rely on a simple password to grant access and that just isn’t secure enough. Strong 2-factor authentication should be an essential part of any remote access system if organizations want to reap the benefits of home working without the risk."

According to research by the TUC almost 3.5 million people already work from home in the UK, an increase of 600,000 since 1997. But with the benefits of working from home to both companies and their employees now widely accepted, it is expected this figure will rise rapidly over the next few years.

Two-factor authentication utilises a password as well as a tangible object like a token, USB device, or even a passcode that can be sent to a mobile phone or PDA via SMS or email. Put simply, it is something you have and something you know. By combining the two, the risk of unauthorised network access is greatly reduced.

Many large companies appear to have gotten the message but despite facing the same business threats, other employers continue to rely on weak password protection, leaving them vulnerable. This probably comes down to cost, along with perceived complexity and the fear of ongoing hassle with a 24/7 remote user community. To overcome this, Signify delivers a fully managed, two-factor authentication service that makes it quick, simple and affordable for organisations of all sizes to eliminate passwords and deliver flexible and secure remote access.

Home working is one of the smarter working practises being promoted through the Work Wise UK campaign, which is entering its third year. It aims to encourage half the working population, some 14 million people, to be offered smarter working by 2011.
