Unfortunately this Sage breach is just one of a thousand breaches that are happening
every day. But despite this the industry refuses to recognise it is fundamentally
broken. It’s simple economics, it costs far less for a hacker to breach companies’
walls than the worth of the data they’re targeting. Until this changes breaches will
continue to be relentless. We need an industry shake up and for businesses to take
collective responsibility.
Businesses and governments are responding breaches like this with short-term and
individualistic thinking, which is creating a much larger problem. Every
organisation reacts by making their business more difficult, and more costly, to get
into than the organisation next door. But the problem hasn’t lessened. Two big
things need to happen for the good guys to start winning the war. One, everyone
needs to share intelligence so that all businesses can up their game in security, to
make it less financially viable for hackers to do their "job". Two, law enforcement
needs to be much tighter and tougher. Until this happens breaches like this are
going to continue to occur on a frighteningly regular basis.
