Rosenberger Optical Solutions & Infrastructure (Rosenberger OSI) introduces The PreCONNECT® OCTO

Rosenberger Optical Solutions & Infrastructure (Rosenberger OSI) introduces a new enhancement: The PreCONNECT® OCTO cabling system is extended by two connector interfaces - MDC and SN® - which are based on robust 1.25mm all-ceramic ferrules. In addition, the systems are equipped with couplings that reliably prevent contamination of the connector end faces. The highlight: since instead of four individual connectors (duplex ports) only one 4-port trunk whip with quad coupling needs to be plugged in, the assembly time of the trunks in their 19" housings is reduced by 75 percent and the risk of mixing up duplex ports is lowered by the same factor.

The two new connector systems MDC and SN® were developed for the realization of multimode SR4 and singlemode DR4/PSM4 OSFP and QSFP-DD transceivers, to enable direct passive port breakout of the four individual duplex ports at the mating face of the transceiver. As a result, they are widely used in data center cabling as well. Both the MDC (Miniature Duplex Connector) from US Conec Ltd. and the SN® (Senko Nano) connector, called SAC in its IEC standard 61754-36, are true push-pull duplex connectors based on 1.25 mm all-ceramic ferrules technology and belong to the Very Small Form Factor (VSFF) connectors.

Up to 192 fibers in thin FRNC-LSZH inner trunk cables.
The PreCONNECT® OCTO MDC and SN® cabling system each enables multi-fiber trunk cabling based on n x 8 fibers/4 duplex channels FRNC (Flame Retardant Non-Corrosive) and LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) indoor cables with up to 16 x 8 = 128 fibers/64 duplex channels. Up to 18 x 8 = 144 fibers/72 duplex channels and 24 x 8 = 192 fibers/96 duplex channels are also available upon request. The n x 8F/4K granularity of PreCONNECT® OCTO MDC and SN® fiber optic breakout trunk cables is optimally matched to multimode SR4 and singlemode DR4/PSM4 applications. The thin and gel-free FRNC-LSZH indoor cables meet the B2ca and Cca fire classes of the EU Construction Products Regulation (BauPVO/CPR) while having low fire loads and weight. Last but not least, like all PreCONNECT® products, these cables contain bend-resistant multimode OM4 or singlemode G657A1 fibers. The singlemode G657A1 fibers are backward compatible with older, non-bend insensitive G652D fibers.

Quad couplings on trunk whips enable time savings of 75 percent, offer protection of connector end faces and prevent mixing up of ports
Because only one trunk whip with MDC/SN® quad coupling needs to be plugged per MDC/SN® quad instead of four individual MDC/SN® connectors, the installation time of the trunks in their 19" housings is reduced by 75 percent. In addition, the quad couplings on the four individual connectors per trunk whip perfectly protect the sensitive connector faces against possible contamination and damage during installation. Mixing up of duplex ports during installation is also ruled out, as the individual MDC or SN® connectors are already plugged into their positions in the quad couplings at Rosenberger OSI’s factory before the insertion loss (IL) is measured.

Contribution to sustainability through very high port efficiency
The reduction of 19" rack height units due to the very high duplex port density of up to 128 MDC/SN® per U rounds off the system. This is because up to 128 MDC/SN® (32 MDC/SN® Quad) duplex ports per U are possible in the 1, 2 and 3U chassis and 153.6 per U (768 in total) in the 5U chassis. This very high port efficiency saves space in the high-cost air-conditioned IT areas and thus makes a positive contribution to the energy efficiency and thus sustainability of the data center. For those who find 128 MDC/SN®per U port density too high, the fiber optics expert also offers half as densely packed 19" housings with only 64 MDC/SN® per U.
