Reducing Healthcare Fraud with Smart Security solutions

January 2013 by Emmanuelle Lamandé

Eurosmart has published a White Paper on Healthcare fraud: "Understanding and measuring fraud - Best practices for proven technology to reduce Healthcare fraud aimed at understanding and measuring fraud".

On average, around 6% to 10% of spending in the healthcare sector is lost to fraud, according to the European Healthcare Fraud and Corruption Network (EHFCN). In Europe, which spent €1,100 billion on healthcare in 2010, this means nearly €110 billion was lost in that year alone.

“Healthcare fraud is a topic of major concern, and fraud mechanisms are becoming increasingly complex. Fortunately, Information Technologies and smart security solutions are powerful tools to prevent abuse and errors” said Oyvind Rastad, Chairman of Eurosmart. “Smart Card Technology can strike at the heart of fraud mechanisms, often with little investment in infrastructures, and without major changes for patients and healthcare professionals”.

The white paper from Eurosmart presents a compendium of observations on trends in healthcare fraud, as well as a selection of best practices and specific recommendations to reduce fraud by implementing better-coordinated IT processes and by putting technology to better use.

Smart cards have been used in several healthcare programs since over 20 years. They ensure the quality of the data entered at the source, the protection of confidential information and strong identification and authentication for patients and healthcare professionals. Furthermore, they also facilitate organizational change by allowing paperless procedures and online services.

Europe has the opportunity to better fight healthcare fraud by applying the best practices and recommendations outlined in the Eurosmart white paper.
