Protection of Privacy Is First Priority for Smart Security Industry

June 2013 by Marc Jacob

Recent events that entailed the violation of private data in both the USA and Europe underscore the importance of better securing digital information and transactions. The Smart Security Industry regards the security and protection of data and privacy as its foremost goal and offers products, solutions and services for secure electronic authentication and signature.

Eurosmart welcomes recent European Commission’s proposals – the reform of EU’s data protection rules, the Regulation on electronic Identification and Trusted Services, and the directive on Network and Information Security, aimed to ensure a high level of cyber security across the EU. “We urge the European decision makers to swiftly adopt the proposed laws and to push the protection of privacy” said Oyvind Rastad, Eurosmart’s chairman. For Eurosmart, the way forward is a combination of a clear regulatory framework and standardized solutions in terms of security, interoperability and privacy protection.

As Rastad pointed out: “Regulation should build on the investments and achievements in smart security solutions over the past 20 years. Secure and easy identification and authentication in diverse markets like mobile telecommunications, payment, identity, healthcare and transport have been governed by privacy-by-design principles that foster trust in the digital world.”

To further promote security and privacy, Eurosmart has just founded the Mobile Trust Working Group. Its main goal is to improve the understanding and awareness among European decision makers about the urgent need for achieving the highest level of security when for example paying with mobile devices or using mobile devices for identification.
