Nixu Corporation: Cybersecurity of Cloud Services requires more active measures

January 2016 by Nixu Corporation

Nixu has become a member of the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), the world’s leading organization dedicated to defining and raising awareness of best practices to help ensure a secure cloud computing environment. Nixu’s objective is, through CSA, to contribute to the generation of cybersecurity practices and standards for cloud services. Currently, cloud services are associated with risks that, if realized, may significantly reduce the level of cybersecurity in companies and organizations. On the other hand, the flexibility and cost-efficiency of cloud services lead the way for their increased popularity. How can these risks be kept under control?
Cloud services are the hottest trend in the IT field at the moment. As such, there is nothing new about cloud services. However, technology has advanced, particularly in terms of data transfer rates, which has enabled more extensive service production in different types cloud services. Cloud service types range from computing power leasing to complete web-based business systems.

The transfer of services and the data contained in them outside the network and management of companies raises concern among many CIOs, especially when it comes to cybersecurity and information security. This concern is often justified, and it forces organizations to consider their information security practices.
When analyzing risks associated with cloud services, it should be considered that the data used in cloud services is stored and processed in a service maintained by another party. It is possible that data is misplaced, distorted, destroyed or disclosed to unknown third parties. Organizations should separately consider how significant these risks are and what they would signify for their organization if realized.

"It is important that organizations carefully consider what data or services they intend to transfer to a cloud so that cloud services produce the best possible benefits and, also, organizations are able to keep risks under control. Furthermore, the security features of cloud services must be taken into account because the default settings of service providers may not offer the best protection there is. Often, organizations forget to plan their exit strategy from cloud services. This is essential in considering information security," says Niki Klaus, manager responsible for compliance services at Nixu.

”We welcome Nixu to the Cloud Security Alliance,” said Jim Reavis, CEO, CSA. ”We look forward to their contributions to raising awareness of the key risks and measures that can be taken to improve the security of data and services delivered via the cloud.”
