New study: Big data in the focus of ICT decision-makers

November 2012 by T-Systems

Growing data volumes, higher processing speeds and an increasing diversity of data sources and types pose new challenges for enterprises. TNS Infratest was commissioned by T-Systems to conduct a broad survey of ICT managers from nine countries and a wide range of different industries on their data management strategy.

The findings reveal marked awareness for the issue of big data. 63 percent of the companies surveyed in Germany believe they have a great or very great need to take action. According to the survey, 43 percent of respondents from German companies state that they already use in-memory technologies to analyze data or plan to do so in the near future.

The in-memory principle enables large and complex quantities of data to be analyzed within a very short time. Its usage scenarios extend beyond just speeding up existing business processes. Enterprises see in-memory technologies as delivering for the first time the possibility of intelligent analyses that can offer the basis for new products and services.

According to the study, 90 percent of those already using in-memory have made good or very good experience with it. 36 percent of respondents said that in-memory applications are preferentially used in performance-critical areas. Around half of those surveyed in Germany said they would enlist the support of external service providers in implementing big data solutions. However, 7 percent would prefer to buy in the analyses as a complete service.

The best-known in-memory applications internationally are Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (67%), SAP HANA * (63%) and IBM Solid DB (33%) according to the study. That means SAP HANA has succeeded in gaining a high level of awareness among the relevant target group just a year after its launch. A total of 19 percent of respondents expect SAP HANA to become the standard database in the SAP environment.

"The study has shown that the issue of big data is gaining momentum. Apart from being used to analyze enormous quantities of data, this technology also delivers improvements in workflows and company processes," says Ulrich Meister, member of management at T-Systems and Head of Systems Integration. "We see potential for innovation in this field, which is vital to enabling new business segments and applications."
