McAfee comment: 30% of UK firms preparing for GDPR

June 2017 by Gordon Morrison, Director of Government Relations at McAfee

Following the news that law firm Irwin Mitchell has found that just 30 per cent of UK firms are preparing for the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Gordon Morrison, Director of Government Relations at McAfee, comments:

"With this new research indicating that just 30 per cent of UK firms are preparing for the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), it’s clear that not only is there a great deal of education needed around what GDPR is, but of the potential benefits that the regulations present.

"The cloud, big data and the advent of Internet of Things are playing an increasingly important role in many organisations operations and plans for new revenue streams. And each of these new technologies presents challenges in terms of data protection and cybersecurity - the foundation of GDPR. But instead of this simply adding to business leaders and IT teams’ concerns, they should instead look at GDPR as an opportunity to transform their data and cyber security approach"

"GDPR presents an opportunity to get the necessary budget and procedures in place to revolutionise an organisations’ approach to and culture around cybersecurity. With just under half of UK businesses identifying at least one cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months. Achieving compliance by May 2018 is critical but, it will be an ongoing requirement and organisations should see GDPR as an opportunity to perhaps reassess and adapt the way they deliver secure services to clients"
