Israel’s Bezeq International Ltd. Selects Arbor Networks’ Peakflow® SP Platform and Pravail® Availability Protection System

June 2013 by Marc Jacob

Arbor Networks, Inc. announced that Bezeq International Ltd., Israel’s leading Internet and international telecommunications provider, has selected Arbor’s Pravail Availability Protection System (APS) and Peakflow SP platform to protect their network and provide managed services to their customers against a top threat to availability, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Bezeq International is also a member of the Arbor Networks Cloud Signaling™ Coalition.

Bezeq International provides comprehensive communications solutions in Internet, telephony (international, domestic and intra-organizational), IT and cloud computing services, hosting, data communications and information security solutions.

“We offer a wide range of services to both retail and enterprise customers, but they all have the same expectations, and that is for quality, consistent and reliable services, that are of course, available at all times,” said Sagi Kozuch, CTO of Bezeq International. “By selecting Arbor Networks, we are partnering with the world leader in DDoS mitigation, further demonstrating our commitment to meeting and exceeding the expectations of our customers.”

“Arbor has been focused on the DDoS problem for more than a decade. We understand that this is a highly complex, rapidly changing security challenge that requires purpose-built solutions. This is not a problem that can be adequately addressed by products that have DDoS mitigation as a feature among many,” said Colin Doherty, President of Arbor Networks. “With Pravail APS, we are empowering network operators to maintain better control over availability, using technology that has been battle-tested in the world’s largest and most complex networks.”

“Arbor has the right solution at the right time for Bezeq International to address cyber-attacks which are growing more complex on a daily basis," said Ido Ganor, CEO of IPV Security, Arbor Networks partner in Israel.

World Leader in DDoS Prevention

Arbor Networks’ customers include the vast majority of the world’s ISPs and many of the largest enterprise networks in use today. According to a report published in June 2013 from Infonetics Research titled, DDoS Prevention Appliance Market Outlook, Arbor Networks was cited as the top supplier of DDoS prevention solutions overall, as well as in the carrier, enterprise and mobile market segments.

Integrated Threat Detection and Mitigation

The deployment of the Peakflow SP platform helps ensure that DDoS attacks are identified and mitigated in the cloud, before they get to customer premises. When Peakflow SP identifies an attack, customer traffic is diverted to the Arbor Threat Management System where it is scrubbed, and attack traffic surgically removed, while the remaining business traffic is passed through to the customer. Arbor delivers an integrated solution that identifies and surgically removes network and application-layer attacks without interrupting the flow of other traffic.

Application-layer DDoS attacks have quickly become the most significant threat to availability of networks and cloud-based services. Application-layer attacks are low bandwidth, difficult to detect and target both end customers and network operators’ own ancillary supporting services, such as HTTP Web services, domain name system (DNS), etc. These attacks are best mitigated on premise. Pravail APS is deployed at the network perimeter and provides visibility into critical IP services and applications running in the data center, such as HTTP, DNS, VoIP/SIP and SMTP traffic. Pravail APS also helps protect data center infrastructure against numerous types of attack, including TCP state exhaustion, HTTP/web attacks, DNS floods/authentication attacks, TCP SYN floods, spoofed /non-spoofed attacks, UDP floods and dozens more.

Botnet Protection via ATLAS® Intelligence Feed (AIF)

Arbor’s ATLAS Intelligence Feed enables Pravail APS to provide unprecedented protection against botnet-fueled DDoS attacks. Over the past five years, Arbor has tracked the rise of botnet-fueled DDoS attacks. – In this year’s Worldwide Infrastructure Security Report, botnets were identified as the primary engine fueling DDoS attacks that threaten the availability of data center and cloud-based infrastructures. Arbor has unique visibility into DDoS botnets because of its ATLAS infrastructure, which combines a darknet sensor network with traffic data from more than 270 service provider customers around the world.

This enormous 43Tbps dataset enables Arbor’s security researchers to develop a unique, globally-scoped view of malicious traffic traversing backbone networks that form the Internet’s core. This insight is critical, as botnets are constantly changing and updating to thwart detection. The ATLAS Intelligence Feed delivers deep DDoS signatures in real-time to help keep the data center edge protected against hundreds of botnet-fueled DDoS attack toolsets and their variants. Moreover, this new feed includes geo-location data and automates the identification of attacks against data center infrastructure and services from known botnets while ensuring that updates for new threats are automatically delivered without software upgrades. Arbor’s researchers are constantly analyzing DDoS botnet attacks – more than 4,300 to date. The ATLAS Intelligence Feed enables customers to directly benefit from the depth and breadth of Arbor’s research team.
