IoD and Barclays report - comment from CEO of CensorNet

March 2017 by Ed Macnair, CEO of CensorNet

Following the news
in City A.M. yesterday that a report published by the Institute of Directors
and Barclays has revealed that more than a third of businesses don’t have a
formal system in place to deal with cyber attacks, here is a comment from
Ed Macnair, CEO of UK cloud security company CensorNet.

“This report continues to prove that business leaders are not learning from
the high profile security breaches of the not-so-distant past. With over a
third of companies failing to provide a formal strategy against cyber
attacks - the relaxed attitude at play is nothing short of astonishing.

Part of the reason for the seeming confusion is likely to be how quickly
and fundamentally the IT of most organisations has changed in the last few
years. The cloud, for example, has completely changed the way people work:
staff are no longer chained to their desks, instead they’ll more often work
remotely on their laptop, tablet or mobile. This calls for a more versatile
security system which accommodates for those using more vulnerable cloud
storage systems in their day-to-day jobs (i.e. Google Drive or DropBox).
Coupled with the increasing sophistication of hackers and the opportunity
the cloud presents to them, it’s crucial that businesses adapt quickly to
the ever-changing IT security landscape.

It’s also no longer a technical issue. We’ve seen the reputation of several
big companies nosedive in recent years, simply because they had no
contingency plan in place to deal with the aftermath of an attack. While
big corporations could still have the financial power to steady the ship,
the repercussions of a poorly managed data breach could mean curtains for
smaller businesses. They also have a legal obligation to secure customer
data, so failure to prepare for such a situation could not only see them in
hot water with customers but with the authorities as well."
