Frost & Sullivan Applauds Emerson Network Power’s Dedication to New Product Development in the UPS Market

April 2015 by Marc Jacob

Based on its recent analysis of the uninterrupted power supply (UPS) market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Emerson Network Power with the 2014 EMEA Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Leadership. Emerson Network Power’s customer-centric approach to product development and peerless focus on innovation is showcased in its Trinergy™ Cube UPS solution. This product is the first static UPS capable of hot-scaling up to 3 MW in a single unit and up to 24 MW when connected in parallel; such power capacity was previously achieved only by rotary UPS solutions.

The Trinergy Cube effectively addresses the growing need for highly reliable power in multi-megawatt data centers. It boasts the highest average operating efficiency in the industry (98.5 percent) based on the enhanced version of the Trinergy Control algorithm. With this adaptive algorithm, it can choose the best mode of operation to save energy based on the history and actual situation of the mains and load.

"Emerson Network Power has an industry-leading reputation for technology development, whereby it consistently delivers products with novel concepts," said Frost & Sullivan Senior Industry Analyst Gautham Gnanajothi. "With this product, Emerson Network Power not only matches the rotary UPS’s offer of high power capacity for data centers, but also challenges them with its added benefits of modularity, scalability, installation flexibility, and ease of maintenance."

Since its conception six years ago, the Trinergy UPS product has been upgraded with value-added features and functionality. One of these is the improved synergy with the remote diagnostic and preventive monitoring service called LIFE™, which aids proactive maintenance, fast incident response, and remote troubleshooting. Emerson Network Power has been the first in the industry to have more than 11,000 UPS connected to a remote diagnostic system.

"Receiving this award is a proud moment for Emerson Network Power as it highlights our long-term commitment to innovation. The Trinergy Cube is one of our many innovations designed to support data centers and help improve their operating efficiencies," said Giovanni Zanei, product marketing director, Power Systems for Emerson Network Power in EMEA. "This industry-wide accolade further demonstrates that Emerson Network Power’s focus on research and development is fundamentally driving data center technology and making the future of our customers’ business possible."

The Trinergy Cube is a big leap forward in the Trinergy UPS product platform, especially because it even improves on the remarkable 99.999998 percent on-field availability coming from a Trinergy installed base of over 700 MW of UPS. This means that it exceeds the availability requirements of a Tier IV data center. Furthermore, it delivers unprecedented levels of installation flexibility that enable configurations in a vast range of layouts, including a straight row, L-shape, or back-to-back.

The Trinergy Cube is the first UPS in the above 500 kVA range that is capable of true HOT scalability. Its smart capacity ensures the best possible usage of physical infrastructure, delivering maximum power to the load and optimizing each individual configuration based on the specific site conditions.

Furthermore, in 2013, the company launched the Liebert® APS UPS powered by its FlexPower™ Technology. The solution features a modular design with a scalable architecture specifically designed to meet end-users’ immediate load requirements as well as efficiently adapt to future needs. It enables the hot swap of both power and battery modules.

In that same year, Emerson Network Power also opened a new Customer Experience Center for AC Power in Italy. It is the largest power system testing facility in Europe and the only facility in Europe that was built for planning and validating the data center UPS infrastructure. This facility presents first-hand experience to its customers on a wide variety of technologies, supported by constant consultation from R&D and engineering specialists.

Emerson Network Power uses an Execution Lean Design that provides a framework for product lifecycle management. These advanced production practices have allowed the company to create an extensive product portfolio covering small, medium, large, and very large power ranges, catering to all end-user verticals, including niche industrial applications.

"The company relies heavily on past and current product experience and customer feedback for technology incubation," noted Gautham. "This, combined with its technical expertise in R&D, has resulted in new technologies that ultimately enhance the overall customer value."

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to the company that has demonstrated uniqueness in developing and leveraging new technologies, which significantly impacts both the functionality and the customer value of the new products and applications. The award lauds the high R&D spend toward innovation, its relevance to the industry, and the positive impact on brand perception.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.
