F-Secure launches F-Secure Internet Security 2010

September 2009 by Marc Jacob

F-Secure Internet Security™ 2010 is a complete security solution designed to meet the needs of today’s Internet users. With the launch of its flagship product, F-Secure also introduces the company’s renewed brand and commitment to “Protecting the irreplaceable”. According to performance tests by the independent testing organization AV-Test.org*, F-Secure Internet Security™ 2010 has 80% less overall system impact and 60% faster virus scans than the previous version. The product also uses 70% less memory than before.**

The completely redesigned user interface is clear and easy to use. The solution’s faster and smoother operation has not been achieved at the expense of security. New features also provide improved detection rates and a safer user experience. Unlike many other security programs, F-Secure Internet Security™ 2010 does not disturb or confuse the user as security problems are handled automatically.

F-Secure’s CTO Pirkka Palomäki says, “We have listened to consumers and have conducted extensive usability studies when developing the 2010 release. F-Secure has now responded with an improved overall experience including major performance gains and a great new user interface. At the same time we provide even better security with innovative new features like Browsing Protection. The result is a security product that sets new standard in safe use of the computer and the Internet.”

The Browsing Protection feature checks if web links are safe. When a Google search has been done, for example, it shows a green check mark next to safe links and a red ‘x’ next to harmful ones. It also automatically blocks websites that spread malware or try to steal the user’s identity information, such as banking details. F-Secure research conducted in August 2009*** shows that across the surveyed countries (UK, Germany, US, Sweden, Finland, Italy and Poland), only a quarter of respondents agree or strongly agree that they are safe from malware spread via websites. Over 40% were not sure. Respondents in Poland (63%) felt least safe with the Swedes (43%) coming in second.

Browsing Protection in F-Secure Internet Security 2010 also includes the unique Exploit Shield which stops attacks that target security holes in the browser and in plug-ins. These holes typically exist if software hasn’t been updated with latest patches or fixes from the software maker. The Exploit Shield also protects against exploits of security holes for which there is no patch yet. F-Secure’s survey showed that 20% of respondents across the countries don’t know if their software is up-to-date and 10% know that it isn’t. Finns take the best care of their software with 85% replying it is up-to-date and Germans come in second at 77%. Polish respondents were least likely to have patched, up-to-date programs on their computer.

Automatic updates and advanced DeepGuard™ cloud computing technology ensure the fastest real-time protection against new viruses, spyware, worms, trojans, rootkits and zero-day attacks. These cloud-based reputation services are now also utilized to strengthen the Parental Control and anti-spam features.

The launch of F-Secure Internet Security™ 2010 with F-Secure’s new brand and our commitment to “Protecting the irreplaceable” means that we place the highest importance on protecting our customers valuable content across devices and access, both from threats and loss.

*AV-Test GmbH (http://www.av-test.org) Updated: August 2009

**Based on F-Secure’s own tests.

***The survey was carried out by independent third party Zoomerang in August 2009 across 1430 Internet users aged 20-40 in the United States, Germany, UK, Italy, Sweden, Finland and Poland. There were approximately 200 persons surveyed per country. F-Secure asked respondents a series of basic online security questions and, using a Likert scale, asked them to rate the extent to which they were confident in the security of given online activities.
