Draka’s latest high performance optical fiber cable package future proofs data centers against technology evolution

April 2010 by Marc Jacob

Draka Communications announces an enhanced data center cable solution that will help data center planners ease migration to 40 Gb and upwards. Draka’s new ‘SLIM’ packaged solution combines laser optimized, bend-insensitive OM3/4 multimode fiber within small form factor cables using multi-fiber push-on (MPO) connectors for distribution, breakout and interconnections within dense installations.

Although copper data cable is usable for distances up to 100m at 10Gbit/s, Draka recommends laser optimized multimode fibre exceeding the current OM3 specification. Draka’s latest bend-insensitive MaxCap-BB-OM3/4 multimode fiber meets this requirement and is suitable for demanding configurations and the challenging cabling routes of small footprint data centers.

To this Draka adds a new cable for MPO based backbone infrastructures as well as 40GBase-SR4 channels, the upcoming backbone standard for data center infrastructure. The new cable is available in two different designs. Ribbon style ( 2x4.5mm with 12 fibers) for stand-alone MPO patchcord use, facilitates termination and results in the smallest cable footprint. And a round (3.3mm diameter with12 fibres) version which is optimized as MPO distribution cable for high density backbones.

This package of the latest cable technology enhances Draka’s UC Future ( UCFUTURE™ ) portfolio of optical fiber cables aimed at demanding data center environments that demand low attenuation and high bandwidth with excellent transmission potential for dynamic data networks. Draka’s data center solutions provide everything LAN, storage and data center designers need to plan a coherent migration path through 10GbE/8GFC to higher data communications infrastructures.
