Deloitte cyber attack - commentary from Smoothwall

October 2017 by Rob Wilkinson, Corporate Security Specialist at Smoothwall

Following new revelations that the Deloitte cyber security breach has exposed many more clients – including national institutions – than first feared, the commentary from Rob Wilkinson, Corporate Security Specialist at internet security company Smoothwall. Rob’s viewpoint is how this is both worrying for governments and businesses, with trust in both already alarmingly low:

“The number of services affected by the Deloitte hack last Autumn doesn’t make for pretty reading for a company that identifies itself as a provider of cyber security solutions. Industries affected now include the US departments of state, energy, homeland security and defence, the US postal service and even the National Institutes of Health. While leaks of documents and emails of blue chip companies would be bad enough (of which there are allegedly now more than 30), breaches and hacks involving institutions that protect the general public should raise a rather loud alarm. With trust in government and businesses already worryingly low, this will do no favours for either; the businesses for failing to protect sensitive data, and the government for allowing a company that’s just been hacked to safeguard sensitive information.

“The reputational and financial damage could be huge for the company; you can bet that many top cyber security providers will be scrabbling around to ensure their solutions are watertight. But this breach shouldn’t have happened in the first place. Migrating its email service – which seems to have been the prime mover in initiating the hack – is a complex operation but one that requires due security diligence. Every company needs to ensure they not only have proper monitoring, encryption and threat detection in place, but a strong cyber security culture as well. No matter the size of your clients, cyber security should be top of any board’s agenda.”
