Data Privacy Day: Consumer’s Choice on Data Privacy
January 2023 by Aubrey Turner, Executive Advisor at Ping Identity
As we mark Data Privacy Day tomorrow, Saturday, 28th of January, Aubrey
Turner, Executive Advisor, Ping Identity, wanted to share his
insights on the importance of offering consumers a choice about their
data privacy.
Aubrey states that businesses must make customers aware of their
autonomy and honour their privacy, rather than exploiting gaps in
regulation and awareness, and as data becomes increasingly valuable to
businesses, it’s vital that privacy measures are safeguarded all year
round, not just on awareness days like Data Privacy Day.
“Privacy is really about choice and trust. It’s fundamentally about
allowing customers to understand what data is collected and how their
data will be used - giving them the clear, simple option to opt-in or
out. Recent research found that__ __77% of people_ [3]_ feel they will
never be in full control of their personal information online - but this
doesn’t have to be so widely (and often blindly) accepted. Businesses
must make customers aware of their autonomy and how their data is used
and honour customer privacy instead of exploiting gaps in regulation and
awareness. Further, as data continues to grow exponentially and becomes
increasingly valuable to businesses, and more competitors come to
market, it’s vital that privacy measures aren’t relaxed, but privacy
is safeguarded. Awareness days, like Data Privacy Day, remind businesses
to pinpoint their privacy policy, but this conversation, and action,
needs to happen all year round.”
