Cybersecurity in former Soviet countries: Ukraine and the Baltic states are in the lead

Surfshark’s chart of the week shows that amongst the former Soviet countries, the Baltic States and Ukraine lead in cybersecurity. This ranking is determined by considering both the threats a country faces and the effectiveness of the security measures it has in place.
Key insights:
• Lithuania and Estonia are tied for first place in terms of cybersecurity among the former Soviet republics. Latvia and Ukraine share the third place.
• Not only do the Baltic states and Ukraine lead among the former Soviet countries, but they also outperform most Western countries. In fact, the average cybersecurity index of Western countries, excluding the former Soviet countries, is slightly lower than that of Latvia and Ukraine.
• When comparing cybersecurity indices among Western countries, only Belgium surpasses Lithuania and Estonia. Canada, Australia, and the US lag behind by more than 20%.
• Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 5 former Soviet countries saw an increase in the cybersecurity index: Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Moldova, and Estonia.
