Cyber Security for Automated Industrial Control Systems

November 2016 by Marc Jacob

In previous years, financial and economic activity of the enterprises has been the main focus of automation in the energy and other sectors. In most of the major energy companies, these projects are completed or are nearing completion. Companies are gradually turning to other vital areas such as modernization of infrastructure and data centers, billing implementing, automated systems for commercial accounting of power consumption, testing cloud technologies and analytics.

CURRENT MARKET TRENDS IN RUSSIA

IT-expenditures in the energy sector are mainly associated with the modernization of existing infrastructure through the implementation of business intelligence solutions aimed to create dynamic payment systems, redistribute loads and create so-called “smart grids”.

The market is moving towards the development of software solutions to analyze the controller’s firmware as a black box. However many vendors are not yet ready to reveal the open source firmware of their controllers.

Another common trend - conjugation of critical facilities subsystems with automation systems. Cyber security subsystem will soon be tightly integrated with access control, fire safety systems, video surveillance, and others. Comprehensive analysis security systems and conjugation with components of information security, deeply integrated into the hardware and software automation system platforms, such as authorization, authentication, access control and the development of appropriate integrated policy of cybersecurity are also quite promising.

PRODUCTS & SOLUTIONS

Today up to 80% of the process control systems equipment in Russia
are of foreign origin

Russian energy companies most often implement ERP, EDMS and EAM systems, as well as information security tools. Projects aimed to introduce the systems of such class are also the largest in the industry.

In the annual report of 2015 Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC informed the audience on its most important projects implemented in IT. Big attention was paid to the realization of the IT transformation program: implementation of SAP ERP, SAP HCM, SAP SRM, document automation system, realization of divisional programs for the development of IT support processes, processes of capital construction, the development of distributed IT infrastructure and creation of typical data centers on the plant.

To protect the corporate network perimeter against cyberthreats Rosenergoatom also continued to work on the firewall system modernization. In the central office of the group and operating nuclear power plants the system of cryptographic protection of video and conference channels was also modernized. Rosenergoatom notes that they monitor, review and analyze all information security incidents on a regular (weekly) basis.
