Comments from Fujitsu - Conflicker worm

December 2015 by Bryan Campbell, Lead Threat Intelligence Analyst in UK & Ireland at Fujitsu

Please see below comments from Bryan Campbell, Lead Threat Intelligence Analyst in UK & Ireland at Fujitsu on the recent Conflicker worm.

The Conficker worm continues to remain highly energetic throughout the UK and is an indicator of the state of business security throughout the country. An indicator of the number of machines that remain unpatched or not updated can be tracked via simple methods such as VirusTotal uploads. Yet despite patches being obtainable against the malware for many years, it remains one of the most observed infections since its initial infection over 7 years ago.

As machines are replaced, it may be that instances of contagion will decline in the coming years. However, organisations need to be practical in cleaning their networks’ infected machines. Without such efforts, the number of infected endpoints communicating is likely to rise. It was recently observed that Conflicker was being shipped in police body cameras, which shows that it’s as prevalent as ever.
