Comment: Uber hacking breach

September 2022 by Steve O’Malley, General Manager, EMEA at Callsign

Following the news of Uber investigating a major data breach due to an apparent hack thecomments from Steve O’Malley, General Manager, EMEA at Callsign.

In his comment, Steve discusses why businesses like Uber need to start moving away from using outdated protection methods such as one-time passwords and instead shift towards using innovative technologies like behavioural biometrics to increase levels of digital trust in the public and private sector.

“The cyberattack on Uber is yet another example of why customers are losing trust in the world we live in. Despite the security measures that companies such as Uber will have in place, including one-time passwords (OTPs) and multi-factor authentication, bad actors are still finding ways to navigate around these measures.

“Alongside this, consumer confidence has hit a record low, and this is having a huge impact on the trust we have in the services we use every day – from retail to banking to social media. If businesses don’t mitigate this soon, then the level of digital trust – the confidence we have in technology, processes and governments to create secure our digital world – will plummet further.

“Business leaders need to start pivoting away from outdated protection methods such as OTPs and shift to more innovative technologies, for example behavioural biometrics which works to identify genuine users through analysing the way they swipe, type or text, without being prone to social engineering – working towards better protecting consumers’ online identity.

“In fact, Callsign’s recent Digital Trust Index research has found with the ongoing shift to digital services, 50% of consumers believe that a regulated digital identity system will become part of our daily lives within five years. The onus is now on the public and private sector to partner to put better security strategies in place to make sure they are building trust with consumers and protecting their online identity.”
