Citrix to Introduce a Cloud Service that Delivers Secure Apps from Azure to any Device

August 2016 by Marc Jacob

At Citrix Synergy this year, our CEO Kirill Tatarinov provided new insights into our comprehensive Citrix Cloud strategy and how we would continue to make secure app and desktop delivery simple and easy for our customers. He also announced our expanded partnership with Microsoft with the promise that we would unveil additional solutions that take our cloud-first, mobile-first approach to new levels.

Citrix and Microsoft Live Virtual Event 500x150In conjunction with this effort, Microsoft recently announced its intent to take the next step in its broad partnership with Citrix, by assisting us in developing the next generation of the Azure RemoteApp service. This future Citrix XenApp “express” offering will combine the simplicity and speed of Microsoft Azure RemoteApp with many of the enterprise capabilities of Citrix XenApp to revolutionize app delivery from the cloud.

This new Citrix application virtualization service is part of our comprehensive Citrix Cloud strategy designed to simplify app and desktop delivery for every use case. The Citrix Cloud XenApp and XenDesktop service provides our enterprise customers with superior performance and flexibility by moving the backend infrastructure to the cloud. Now Citrix can combine the power and flexibility of our Citrix Cloud platform including the industry-leading HDX user experience and extend the original simple, prescriptive, and easy-to-consume vision of Microsoft Azure RemoteApp by orchestrating the applications in the cloud as well. This offering will radically simplify app delivery without sacrificing management or end user experience.

In many ways, you can look at this XenApp “express” service as Azure RemoteApp v2.0. You can also see it as the fastest, easiest way to use XenApp in the cloud. Either way, this new service will be the next generation application virtualization and delivery service for Azure.

The bottom line? Citrix is committed to bringing a simplified management experience that will mirror many of the workflows existing Azure RemoteApp customers have come to love. And Microsoft and Citrix are working on a migration service to minimize disruption to existing RemoteApp customers. The new Citrix offering will also simplify app provisioning, enhance monitoring, strengthen security and optimize the app delivery experience, which are key features many existing Citrix customers have come to love.

By centralizing and securing your data on the trusted and protected Azure platform, application access and data stay safe in the cloud. This helps reduce the risk of information loss from lost and stolen devices. Designed for fault tolerance, it’s the platform that leading governments, financial services organizations, and companies around the world rely on.

In an effort to streamline efficiencies across all our joint Citrix and Microsoft efforts, the new service is being developed in conjunction with the previously announced XenDesktop for Windows 10 on Azure service. Unifying both efforts showcases the strength of the integrated Citrix and Microsoft partnership as well as demonstrates the commitment from both companies to deliver the best possible application and desktop experience. By integrating all these efforts across the board, both Citrix and Microsoft will be able to drive down the cost of app and desktop delivery while still providing enhanced security, management and application performance from one of the industry’s largest public clouds: Microsoft Azure.

Today marks a monumental shift in the mindset of cloud-hosted, business application delivery. In the upcoming months at key industry events such as the Microsoft and Citrix: Making Cloud Simpler, Business Faster virtual event in August 2016 and Microsoft Ignite in Atlanta, GA in September 2016, we will be sharing more information and details regarding this new service.

Enterprise customers looking to take advantage of the cloud today should ask their sales representative about the Citrix Cloud XenApp and XenDesktop service.
