Cassidian’s most secure IP encryptor more than doubles in speed

January 2012 by Marc Jacob

Cassidian’s ECTOCRYP Blue, the UK’s only HAIPE-certified 1Gb/s IP encryptor, is the fastest high grade encryption device available in the UK Market. New software has now doubled the effective speed of the units again. Utilising a standard mix of data, the systems perform at 870Mb/s which is best performance in the UK.

Major customers for ECTOCRYP Blue include the Police, the Security Services, and the Armed Forces. “Our clients use ECTOCRYP Blue to protect data up to Impact Level 6 – Top Secret” explains Doug McGinn, VP Cassidian Cyber Security Centre. “Version 2.3 provides significant improvements in terms of uptime and overall speed.”

ECTOCRYP Blue has been seven years in development and Cassidian has pioneered a new generation of UK-built cryptographic devices. “Previous crypto’s were difficult to manage and required very frequent key updates,” says McGinn. “With ECTOCRYP Blue we were able to launch an advanced crypto, capable of thousands of concurrent connections to other cryptographic devices, with zero visibility to users. In addition, our advanced technology means that the key updates itself for up to two years significantly reducing maintenance costs for our customers.”

In the two years since launch, over 400 ECTOCRYP Blue units have been deployed in meshes of up to a hundred units. The doubling of internal performance has come about through extremely advanced software engineering executed by world leading cyber experts from Cassidian’s national Cyber Security Centre.

The Newport-based development team were able to revisit the way that the ECTOCRYP Blue encrypted data packets to effectively double the performance of the system. “Our small packet rate used to be 90Mb/s, but as a result of significant engineering effort, we’ve been able to increase that to 270mb/s – three times as fast as before,” says McGinn. This has a major impact on the crypto’s ability to perform a mixture of tasks and increases it from 540Mb/s to 870Mb/s.
