Breaking News: US data leak - 198 million Americans’ personal information accidentally released.

June 2017 by David Kennerley, director of threat research at Webroot

The comment from David Kennerley, director of threat research at Webroot on the recent breaking news regarding US data leak: 198 million Americans’ personal information accidentally released.

“The leak of almost 200 million Americans’ personal information and political views is truly shocking. Organisations have a responsibility to keep private information secure, especially when we are seeing a daily onslaught of data breaches. This is a clear example of poor data privacy and storage practice by the marketing company. The data was made ready available on a public and easily accessible Amazon cloud server, with no additional security protection in place.”

“The storage and transit of critical and sensitive data needs to be constantly monitored, and business practices and improvements to data privacy practices need to be made frequently. It is important to understand where and how data is stored, who needs it, when they need the it and how they will access it. Finally IT departments need to start taking a lead role in ensuring that employees are following well-maintained security policies regarding the use of cloud solutions to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again.”
