Breaking News: FA cyber concerns

September 2017 by Kirill Kasavchenko, Principal Security Technologist, EMEA at Arbor Networks

The comment from Kirill Kasavchenko, principal security technologist, EMEA at Arbor Networks on the recent announcement of FA cyber concerns.

“These measures by the Football Association ahead of next summer’s World Cup once again highlight the importance of ensuring the security of network connections at major sporting events. Last month’s WADA hack emphasised what is at stake for sporting organisations, with footballers’ private medical information leaked. So, it is great to see the FA acting to mitigate against this cyber espionage becoming the new normal.

“From the thousands of journalists sharing their video and photos with worldwide media, to the millions of fans sharing their experiences - the challenge of securing network connections is not a small task. England players and staff being advised to not use public or hotel Wi-Fi is a good first step, but the FA could go further. To add additional security data, it is essential for businesses to admit that people, their personal and work devices like laptops and smartphones are the new organisation perimeter, and are not always under control of the company. Organisations should expect that attackers are able to make it into the business through people attending offsite conferences and sport events. Therefore there needs to be a process in place to stop attackers before they achieve their goals. Of course, this isn’t all about technology – although having the right tools helps – it is about the people, the processes and the right reaction if something does go wrong.”
