Anti-spam gets a makeover from PineApp

August 2008 by Marc Jacob

Anti-spam products have become must have commodity items for all organisations; but now a new generation of email management solutions is emerging that do much more than simply block unwanted spam. That’s the view of PineApp, which has developed its latest Mail-Secure anti-spam appliances to provide advanced content management along with intelligent email routing functionality.

One way PineApp is applying its technology to do this is to intelligently route legitimate email to the most appropriate location based on content. For example, if an email has ’CV’ or ’job application’ in the subject, it can be sent to the HR department and blocked to the intended recipient; while any email which may indicate a valid potential customer can be routed to the correct sales department.

Another issue that should not be ignored is the inappropriate use of email by employees, either knowingly or unknowingly. This not only places confidential information in jeopardy but can also lead to civil or criminal prosecution of the directors of the business.

PineApp also helps companies to eliminate pornography in the workplace. While it is not illegal to hold illicit material on a company email server unless it is child pornography; it is a criminal offence to transmit it under the Obscene Publications Act and can lead to imprisonment of the company’s officers.

To address this, PineApp’s Mail-Secure offers advanced image processing technologies to automatically detect and block incoming and outgoing pornographic material as well as images embedded in documents, PowerPoint presentations, videos and other media. In addition, PineApp’s Pornography Filter is also allied with the IWF (Internet Watch Foundation) database of child pornography websites. This identifies email with links to inappropriate sites, blocks them and notifies the administrator that the link is being sent.
