telent plc wins £25 million contract to support Fire and Rescue Services

October 2007 by Marc Jacob

telent plc, a technology services company, announced that it has been selected by EADS Defence & Security Ltd (EADS DS), an expert in secure communications, to support the roll-out of the FiReControl project for England’s Fire and Rescue Service. Under the contract with EADS DS, worth £25 million over eight years, telent will provide communications infrastructure to support Communities and Local Government’s FiReControl project – part of its investment in the FRS to enable it to meet the challenges of today’s world.

The FiReControl project will equip England’s Fire and Rescue Service with a modern and efficient communications infrastructure and will involve the establishment of nine new Regional Control Centres (RCCs). telent will design and install best-in-class mobilisation equipment, including PCs, wireless local area networks (WLANs), pagers and telephone systems, in all of the RCCs and the 1,410 fire stations across England, as well as provide ongoing maintenance and support.

“The new communications infrastructure will offer a secure and resilient network, bringing the same advanced technology, systems and processes to all RCCs,” said Ian Griffiths, FiReControl Project Director EADS Defence & Security. “We need a trusted partner who has the appropriate knowledge and expertise to provide such a critical national network. telent is that partner: it understands the way that the Fire Service works, and has an excellent track record for on time delivery.”

“It is important to everyone that the Fire and Rescue Service has a communications system that will equip it for the challenges of the 21st century,” said Steve Harris, managing director of telent Enterprise Services. “telent is establishing a reputation for designing, installing and maintaining mission critical networks for blue light services and large enterprise in the UK and beyond; we are pleased to be a part of the FiReControl project.”
