Vigil@nce - mpg123: buffer overflow via ID3
November 2010 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can invite the victim to open a malicious MP3
document, in order to execute code in mpg123.
Severity: 2/4
Creation date: 28/10/2010
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The mpg123 program displays multimedia documents.
The ID3 protocol is used to add information (author, singer, etc.)
to an MP3 audio document.
When the user has a non UTF-8 (ISO-8859-1, etc.) environment, the
utf8_ascii() function of src/metaprint.c is called to convert ID3
fields. However, this function does not correctly compute the size
of the character string. A buffer overflow then occurs.
An attacker can therefore invite the victim to open a malicious
MP3 document, in order to execute code in mpg123.
