Vigil@nce - libxml2: infinite loop via entities

October 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can create malformed XML data, in order to generate a
denial of service in applications linked to libxml2.

Impacted products: Debian, Fedora, libxml2, MBS, openSUSE, RHEL,
Ubuntu

Severity: 2/4

Creation date: 16/10/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The libxml2 library implements an XML parser.

However, an XML document build, with a large number of entity
substitutions, especially forces the parser to loop numerous times
("billion laughs" variant attack).

An attacker can therefore create malformed XML data, in order to
generate a denial of service in applications linked to libxml2.
