Vigil@nce - libxml2: denial of service via a recursive entity

April 2017 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : https://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can submit a document including a circular entity
definition and to be parsed by libxml2, in order to trigger a
denial of service.

Impacted products: openSUSE Leap.

Severity: 2/4.

Creation date: 13/02/2017.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The libxml2 product includes a validating XML parser.

A document may include an entity definition in the internal DTD
subset. However, when the entity definition is circular, the check
against a depth limit is wrongly done.

An attacker can therefore submit a document including a circular
entity definition and to be parsed by libxml2, in order to trigger
a denial of service.
