Vigil@nce: file, denial of service via CDF
March 2012 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can invite the victim to open a malicious CDF document
with the "file" tool, in order to stop the process.
– Severity: 1/4
– Creation date: 23/03/2012
IMPACTED PRODUCTS
– Debian Linux
– Mandriva Linux
– Unix - plateform
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The CDF (Compound Document Format) format is used to group several
files (SVG, XHTML, etc.).
The "file" tool analyzes files, in order to detect their formats.
The cdf_read_sector() and cdf_read_short_sector() function of the
src/cdf.c file analyze sectors of CDF documents, in order to
indicate their content. However, if sector information are
incorrect, the "file" program tries to read at invalid memory
addresses, so it stops.
An attacker can therefore invite the victim to open a malicious
CDF document with the "file" tool, in order to stop the process.
